Urban regeneration, joint planning, and innovation in the creative industries. BASE is a project for cross-pollination between the arts, enterprises, technology and social innovation. Our mission: to generate new reflections for 21st century cities, establish new connections between different arts, disciplines and languages, and boost Milan’s status among the great capitals of creative production.
Today the project is manifested in a 12,000m2 space dedicated to exhibitions, performances, workshops and conferences, with a large studio and artists’ residence.
Located within the ex-Ansaldo complex, one of the most important urban regeneration projects in Europe, BASE is breathing new life into a monument of industrial architecture, exploring new models of collaboration between public and private: a state-owned building, entrusted by Milan City Council to a private, non-profit social enterprise, the self-financed outcome of a union between five different charities and businesses.
BASE is a project open to contributions from individuals and organisations. All our supporters are eligible for tax relief through ArtBonus, the government scheme for the protection of our cultural heritage, and will have a square metre dedicated to them within the building.

BASE is a huge organism for learning and a permanent education workshop dedicated to the city, the neighbourhood, and creative professionals.
BASE is a machine that learns, with the capacity to establish a dialogue between different creative communities, enabling them to absorb, share, and transform each other’s contents and influences in different fields, including writing, illustration, music, art, design and much more.
In the mid-1800s the Savona-Tortona area was still farming land, criss-crossed by ditches and canals. Urban development began with the construction of the railway, around which a large manufacturing centre took shape.
The ex-Ansaldo plant was built between 1904 and 1923, a time of dramatic growth in heavy industry. The plant started out as a mechanical firm before being bought by Ansaldo in the 1960s, which is when the production of engines, train carriages and tramways began. The transformation that the production system underwent in the 1970s resulted in many factories being abandoned, with whole plants lying empty.
In 1990 Milan City Council bought the Ansaldo complex and so began the area’s process of development for cultural purposes. In 1994 the Laboratori della Scala, the Scala Theatre workshops, moved into the complex, followed by MUDEC – Museum of Cultures, which opened in 2015.
A public call for proposals in 2014 resulted in the remaining spaces being assigned to a group made up of Arci Milano, Avanzi, esterni, H+ and Make a Cube3, which then became a social enterprise in the form of a limited company.
